We want to make sure that all people are treated fairly and kept safe on the job. When foreign agricultural workers are injured or made ill on the job in Ontario, they are eligible for WSIB benefits and services like any Ontarians covered by the WSIB.
When a workplace injury or illness happens
When a workplace injury or illness happens, we will help the person with their recovery and return to work, which may include entitlement to medical treatment and assessments. When someone returns to their home country, they may continue to be entitled to further medical treatment and assessments.
We do not make the decision on when an injured or ill foreign agricultural worker leaves the province as repatriation and immigration decisions are not within the WSIB’s control. These decisions fall under federal jurisdiction as the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program is a Government of Canada program.
However, if someone decides to stay in Ontario past their designated repatriation date, they should contact us to discuss how we may be able to help with their recovery. They may continue to be entitled to medical treatment and assessments in Ontario.
Services we provide
If a foreign agricultural worker is injured or made ill at work, we will:
- Stay in contact with the person throughout their recovery and return to work, whether they are in Ontario or their home country, to make sure that they receive the care and support they need.
- Pay for their travel to and from medical appointments.
- Help with finding health care for people receiving treatment in Ontario or their home country, and pay the providers directly
