WSIB investing in the future through new scholarship programs at Fanshawe College and Western University

London, August 21, 2024 - The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) announced today it is providing $3 million in funding for scholarship programs at Fanshawe College and Western University over the next five years.

“With our new head office opening here in 2025, we are making a strong commitment to this community and creating job opportunities in London,” says Jeff Lang, WSIB President and CEO. “These new scholarships are one way we can invest in the future of London and the future of the WSIB by helping students reach their potential.”

At Fanshawe College, the scholarships will help 105 students across programs including Business, Nursing and Information Technology. Students can be in two-year diploma programs or advanced diploma programs.

"Partnering with the WSIB is a significant achievement for Fanshawe, our students, and the broader London community,” shares Jeff Wright, VP, Corporate Strategy and Business Development. “We are delighted that the WSIB is creating new opportunities for Fanshawe students, supporting their entry into programs and career paths that will have a lasting impact on our communities."

At Western University, the scholarships will help 65 students in undergraduate and master’s programs who are studying a range of disciplines including Actuarial and Data Science, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Computer Science and Software Engineering.

“We are grateful to the WSIB for its visionary support for students pursuing careers in these critical areas,” said Western President Alan Shepard. “This investment will help students develop the professional skills to become leaders who will make an impact locally and around the world.”

Investing in students today is one part of the WSIB’s plan to hire top London talent.

“We’re investing in our future and the future of this community,” says Lang. “We want a strong local pipeline of talent to support our mission to help people who are injured at work and reduce the impact of workplace injuries and illnesses on people and businesses in Ontario.”

The first round of scholarships were awarded to Fanshawe students this summer for the 2024/2025 school year. Western students can apply for 2024/2025 scholarships by September 30 at uwo.ca.
