"It's Your Job" student video contest brings health and safety to the classroom
Toronto, November 29, 2017 – The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is launching the fourth annual "It's Your Job" student video contest in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
"This contest is a creative way to get students in Ontario focused on health and safety and help them understand how to identify unsafe workplace scenarios," said Elizabeth Witmer, WSIB Chair. "When students have the knowledge, they can also have the confidence to ask questions, speak up and become active participants to help make their workplaces safer."
The contest is specifically aimed at young people, who are typically most at risk for workplace injuries. Sadly, since 2001 there have been 37 traumatic fatalities among young workers aged 15-24.
To enter the contest, students can submit an original two minute video to illustrate the importance of working safely on the job. This year's contest theme is: Impairment at Work is Everyone's Business.
There will be three provincial winners who will earn a cash prize for themselves and for their school. The prize levels are:
- 1st Place: $2000 for the entrant(s), $2000 for their school
- 2nd Place: $1500 for the entrant(s), $1500 for their school
- 3rd Place: $1000 for the entrant(s), $1000 for their school
The first place Ontario winner will go on to compete against secondary school winners from across the country as part of an annual national competition hosted by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
The contest is open to current Ontario secondary school students. Video submission deadline is March 2, 2018. More information can be found here.
