The WSIB and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development are committed to helping make Ontario the safest place to work.
One of the ways we work together is by providing WSIB rebates to businesses that participate in the ministry’s Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers – a voluntary program that promotes workplace health and safety and helps reduce work-related injuries and illness.
Businesses that apply to the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program and are recognized by the Chief Prevention Officer for investing in health and safety can qualify for the WSIB’s Ontario Safe Employers Rebate Program for up to three consecutive years.
How do I qualify for Ontario Safe Employers Rebate Program?
Businesses that meet the ministry's requirements, and achieve and maintain Chief Prevention Officer recognition through the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program are eligible for Ontario Safe Employers Rebate Program from the WSIB for up to three consecutive years.
Once you’ve achieved recognition, the ministry will send your information to the WSIB. We’ll then take a look at your account to make sure you meet these requirements:
- are registered with the WSIB and have an active WSIB account
- are a Schedule 1 business
- have paid your premiums and any outstanding balances owed to the WSIB
- comply with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 and haven’t been charged under the act or the Criminal Code of Canada in the last 24 months
- please note: if a business is charged under the act or the Criminal Code of Canada after receiving the rebate, the WSIB reserves the right to retract the rebate
- haven’t experienced a work-related fatality at your business (or are waiting on a WSIB decision regarding a fatality) from the time you’re recognized by the Chief Prevention Officer under the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program and the time you receive the WSIB rebate
- if your business has a work-related fatality while in the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program, you won’t be eligible for WSIB rebates
In your second and third year of the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program, you’ll need to:
- maintain your Chief Prevention Officer recognition and meet the WSIB eligibility requirements outlined for year one
- complete a culture survey each year that will help you understand your employee’s feelings and knowledge of health and safety in your workplace
- show us that a return-to-work program is a lasting part of your occupational health and safety management system and meets our requirements

Can I participate in the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program and Health and Safety Excellence program?
Businesses that have applied for or been recognized by the Chief Prevention Officer through the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program aren’t eligible to participate in or receive rebates from the WSIB's Health and Safety Excellence program. Businesses will be disenrolled from the Health and Safety Excellence program once they apply for the Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employers Program.
We recommend completing all of the Health and Safety Excellence program topics before applying for recognition through the Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employers Program.
Health and Safety Excellence program members should contact their provider or us at health_and_safety@wsib.on.ca if they’ve applied for or are interested in applying for the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program.
How much can I earn in rebates?
The amount you can earn in rebates depends on a number of factors like the amount you paid in WSIB premiums in the previous year, your predictability rating and which year of the Supporting Ontario's Safe Employers Program you’re in.
You’ll receive a minimum rebate of $3,000 per year. The maximum rebates are $300,000 for year one, $200,000 for year two and $100,000 for year three. Your rebates cannot exceed 100 per cent of the premiums you paid in the previous year.
