Policy

Apprentices have WSIB coverage while working for an employer whose business is covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act or the Workers' Compensation Act (the Act) either compulsorily or by application. They are not covered while attending classroom courses.

Guidelines

Apprentice

An apprentice is a person registered under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, who has signed a contract of apprenticeship for training and instruction in a trade, through or from an employer.

Journeyperson

A journeyperson is eligible for coverage as an apprentice if working toward certification in a different trade, and is registered for this purpose as an apprentice under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act.

Employer

The employer of an apprentice is the employer for whom the apprentice works.

WSIB coverage

Because apprenticeship programs and government requirements may change, to ensure WSIB coverage, it is imperative that interested individuals contact the provincial government office responsible for apprenticeship programs and obtain up-to-date information.
