Policy
Apprentices have WSIB coverage while working for an employer whose business is covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 either manditorily or by application. They are not covered while attending classroom courses.
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to identify who is considered to be an apprentice and to outline when an apprentice may have WSIB coverage.
Guidelines
Apprentice
An apprentice is a person who is formally registered in a Ministry apprenticeship program under a signed contract of apprenticeship ("a registered training agreement") in accordance with the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, and is receiving training and instruction in a trade, through or from an employer, that is required as part of the program.
Journeyperson
A journeyperson is eligible for coverage as an apprentice if working toward certification in a different trade, and is registered for this purpose as an apprentice under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act.
Employer
The employer of an apprentice is the employer for whom the apprentice works.
WSIB coverage
Because apprenticeship programs and government requirements may change, to ensure WSIB coverage, it is imperative that interested individuals contact the provincial government office responsible for apprenticeship programs and obtain up-to-date information.
